Hike to Lost Lake in Seward

After Denali, Seward is the most visited destination in Alaska. If you are coming to Alaska by air, a typical vacation package would have you stay two nights in Seward before heading north to Denali National Park. Of course you would enjoy full day trip into the Kenai Fjords National Park aboard a cruise boat, or take a full day Real Alaska Tour. But here is something very few visitors seldom do, hike to Lost Lake. Continue reading

Alpha Mountain Hike – Inside Denali National Park

An account by Andrew, a Naturalist Guide at Denali Backcountry Lodge.

Denali Hiking AdventureRain gear, check. Waterproof boots, check. Bagged lunch and snacks, check. Mosquito head net and repellant, check.

As my group arrived at the check in area eagerly awaiting Denali Backcountry Lodge’s first challenging hike of the season, I couldn’t help but smile with anticipation. A small intimate group, just the way you want it. By the time we had crossed over Moose Creek to the edge of the property, our group had felt like we had known each other for years. The hike description leads one to believe they will receive a true Alaskan bushwhacking experience, and a bushwhacking experience is most definitely had. Continue reading

The Weather Monster

Weather is unpredictable.  It’s a cure of the modern world; we can plan for everything except the changing winds.  We try to predict whether or not the weekend will be clear and sunny, or hazy, or rainy, but the truth is that we have a very limited view on weather patterns.  For instance, today started out clear, sunny, not a cloud in the sky.  It was only supposed to hit 65 degrees out.  The day was predicted to take a down turn around noon, when a colder front from the ocean would come in and create clouds, and a little rain.  Did this happen?  No, it didn’t.  It’s 2 PM and there are still no clouds in the sky and it’s a balmy 70 degrees. Enjoy your Summer

We’re almost halfway through June.  I can’t believe how fast summer is going by!  So far this summer I have gone Frolfing on two different courses, hiking twice, and camping once.  It may seem like a lot to someone that wasn’t raised in Alaska, but to me that’s just the tip of the iceberg.  With only 3 more months of summer, I plan to do things that I didn’t think I could. Summer Adventures in Alaska

I need to get out and do more this summer.  I have lived in Alaska the majority of my life and I haven’t been on a day cruise, or even been farther north than Fairbanks.  I went snow machining once, but that scared the death out of me so I figure doing the really adventurous things isn’t for me.  Sure, it’s almost a rite of passage to go up Arctic Valley in the winter and sled down the mile long hill, but that’s not a real thrill unless you’re some of the first kids down after fresh snow.  I hiked up a mountain in middle school, but it was a field trip and every kid who went to school there was given the opportunity to do it.  Still, none of it was terribly exciting.

This summer I plan on making the most of the 20 hours of daylight.  I only live once right?  We all make promises to ourselves; only a few of them are realistic to keep.  I think that vowing to hike in Denali National Park, or even going on an Alaskan cruise is easily fulfilled.  I will commit myself to experiencing Alaska in new ways, ways that I should have seen my home years ago.  Be it taking the Alaska Railroad to Fairbanks, or going to the Seward Sea Life Center, I will have an adventure this summer.

Will you?
