Denali Backcountry Lodge; Unspoiled Beauty

The Grand Ascent
It was our last day at this very exclusive lodge, time for the departure instruction. After dinner, the manager asked who all are leaving tomorrow. Several of us raised our hands.
His next question was why? None of us were really prepared for that. He went on to say; is there a better place on the face of this earth? We had no choice but to agree with him. There isn’t.
Denali Backcountry Lodge is located in the valley carved by Moose Creek deep inside the Denali National Park, as far as the road will take you. Beyond the lodge, the park roads widens into a 1600 feet long gravel runway, what the locals lovingly call Kantishna International Airport. And beyond that there is nothing but unspoiled beauty for hundreds of miles.
Flightseeing is one of the popular activities, if the weather smiles upon you. You are so close to Mount McKinley, when you take off you feel like you are there already. The mountain is still about 30 miles away but its vastness makes it look a lot closer.
We had just spent two nights (the third one, tonight being our last one) in this heavenly place. We are of age and therefore not so much into hiking and such but we had the greatest of times nevertheless. The management is very considerate and accommodates everyone. Each and every staff member is friendly, ready to help with anything a guest may like.
I happened to strike a conversation with the head housekeeper, Tess. I did not expect a housekeeper to know much about the natural history but Tess like many other staff members is, an old timer. This was her fifth season. Unaware of that experience, I was so surprised when Tess told me about all the wildlife, the Northern lights and the whole gamut.
With the staff doing a wonderful job, accommodations so clean and comfortable, food excellent, how can one not enjoy this place?
Really, is there a better place on the face of this earth? I will have to say NO.

Alaska Vacation Transportation

Scenic views from Alaska Railroad
Let me tell you though, the motorcoach they reserved for the travel between adventures was so comfortable I was able to powernap. The train ride, although hard not to watch the scenery rush by, I was able relax and write a few notes in my journal. The snacks that where available on both coaches were appetizing and took the edge off before any of the huge meals served at any given Alaska restaurant. The best part, I had my family with me, not bothered by having to drive. It was great to catch up with them.
I couldn’t list all the activities available, but I can tell you my family spoke very highly of the tour consultants. I was able to take in more of Alaska than just a normal Alaska cruise tourist does. In fact, Alaska Denali Tours offers pre and post cruise packages. Alaska Denali Tours made this special, just the right touch.

Alaska Bear Viewing Tour – Redoubt Bay
Redoubt Bay is home to one of the most concentrated and viewable bear populations in the state of Alaska. View Alaska black and brown bears in their natural habitat. Fly-out by floatplane from Anchorage to the Redoubt Bay Lodge. Redoubt Bay Lodge is located 70 miles southwest of Anchorage near the dramatic entrance of Lake Clark National Park and Preserve.
As your Alaska bear watching trip begins, bear viewing is from a covered pontoon boat with our experienced naturalist guides through the chain of Big River Lakes, host to sockeye and Coho salmon runs and popular feeding site for resident bear. Grizzlies are very much a part of the Alaska bear viewing scene and are a favorite topic with most hunters, hikers, photographers, and fishers.

Theres one coming!
Alaska Grizzly Bears (aka Brown Bears) have been known to live 34 years in the wild, though this is rare. Usually, old males may reach 22 years. Old females may live to 26. Brown bears are grizzly bears and used to be considered separate species. Taxonomists now consider them to be the same species – Ursus arctos –since they can interbreed and produce fertile young. Many people differentiate “brown bears are those that live near the coast and have access to salmon, whereas the grizzly bears live in the interior of Alaska without access to salmon and are primarily vegetarian.
Brown bears may closely resemble black bears, but the brown bear is larger, has a large shoulder hump, and longer straighter claws. The coloration of brown bears can vary from being dark brown to blonde. Just as in black bears, weights vary according to the time of year. During the late summer and fall, a mature male brown bear weighs between 400 and 900 pounds, with very large individuals weighing as much as 1,400 pounds (Kodiak Island). Females weigh one half to three quarters as much as the males.
