Looking Forward to 2012!

Fall In DenaliHere in the Mat-Su valley fall is at its peak, and before we know it the leaves and bright fall colors will all be gone. Fall is the season of reflection for us Alaskans when we marvel at the beauty of nature, reflect on all that has transpired in the past months, soak up as much sunlight as we can, and valiantly look forward to the winter; anticipating yet another beautiful spring and summer in the months that will surely follow. Spring Vacation

Spring flowers

Tiny flowers

Early in the season travelers to Alaska can experience the wonders of the environment come back to life after the long winter months. The tundra bursts to life with vibrant colors of flowers. Freshly melted snow saturating the terrain for the bountiful berry patches later in the year. This is the time for color & renewal the time for the animals to come out of hibernation. Seeing Alaska in the summer in all of its grandeur is nothing like watching the beginnings of life come in the Alaskan springtime. You may see the wobbly legs of the twin moose just born a few hours before. The yawn and sleepy eyes of the great grizzly bear as it sees the world for the first time. A den of Timber wolf puppies scramble to see the new budding flowers and to decide which one tastes the best.

Off in the distance are Denali and the Alaska mountain range, still softened by the winter’s snow, packed into every wrinkle. The view is magnificent. This will be a vacation to come back and revisit in your discussions in the break room.

Weekend Getaway to Denali National Park

I live and work in Alaska. My friends, family and I always look forward to a few weekend getaways in our own backyard. And when you live in Alaska that is one big backyard!!

I had the opportunity for a weekend getaway to Denali this summer with my family. What an adventure! We stayed at the Denali Cabins, 8 miles south of the National park entrance. I certainly appreciate staying in Denali away from the major crowds that congregate at the park entrance hotels. The Cabin staff was friendly and helpful. They even gave us ideas on where to have dinner after we arrived.

The cabins were all free standing in a beautifully wooded area. They even had outdoor hot tubs available for our use and a continental breakfast each morning. The kids even made friends with some of the other children staying at the Cabins. My children and I enjoyed several of the activities available at the park entrance area. We took advantage of the complimentary shuttle service from the Cabins to the park entrance, a great way to get around, especially if you have taken the train or a motorcoach to Denali.

We definitely plan on staying at the Denali Cabins again in the future.

Denali Backcountry Lodge, Beyond Refreshing

Denali Backcountry Lodge

Denali Backcountry Lodge

While in the process of planning my Alaskan vacation I came across the Denali Backcountry Lodge, a lodge that was located deep within Denali National Park. I was not only intrigued by the remote location but also what amenities were available at this facility.

When you think about being in the wilderness you expect to be camping-not the case with the Denali Backcountry Lodge. Upon my arrival I was in for a bigger treat than I had anticipated. The cabins were very nice, clean, and also came with it’s own restroom-I was very pleased. I wasn’t looking to stay in my cabin for any extended amount of time because I only had a few days to soak in the serenity of the location, but it was nice to know that I had a hot shower and warm bed to crawl into after a long day of exploring.

I found myself very inspired by the location-the creek that runs through the property was an added bonus to the peaceful setting. I remember sitting outside my cabin around 11:00 pm and the only sounds I heard were the sounds of nature-not a sound of society near. For once in my life I felt like I got back to the basics of life-without the hussle and bussle of society-this was beyond refreshing.
