Having taken several cruises and knowing from personal experience it can be difficult to navigate through all the choices, I wanted to give a few recommendations on booking a cruise.
The destination and itinerary list seems to grow every year. First have an idea of where you would like to go or what it is that you want to see. Be for warned though after going through the different destinations that could change. There is so much to see and do.
Know the best time of year to cruise the destination you choose. The cruise lines do a good job of making the cruises in each destination during the best times but they can still offer lower rate cruises if it is near the shoulder seasons, which could mean closer to hurricane season or rainy times.
Let me tell you I would highly recommend using a cruise specialist. They have a wealth of knowledge and can save you a lot of time. They will need to have some information from you in order to make your booking, so being prepared is good. Below is a list of things to know before you book your cruise.
- Preferred Cruise Line
- Destination Date(s)
- Number of passengers (there is a discount for 3rd & 4th person in same cabin)
- What type of cabin (inside w/no windows, outside w/window, or verandah/balcony)
- Legal Names (as they appear on your passport)
- Early, Late or Open dining (Early is usually around 6PM, Late is around 8PM, Open is anytime during the dining hours)
- Table size ( for the reserved dining times, usually tables from 2-10 people)(Open sits with different people each night)
- Bed Configuration (twins or converted to queen)
- Air & Transfers (do you want the cruise line to book your air flights & transfers to/from ship)
- Shore Excursions (activities/sightseeing you can purchase at each port ).
With the new TSA rules you will need to provide your passport information and your passport must be valid for 6 months after your cruise
Cruising is a great way to see several destinations and possibly see one that you may want to come back and visit on land in the future. Cruising is having your hotel float to each new destination with you, where you can enjoy different sights each day. The added benefits : something for everyone to do while on the ship from entertainment, casino, outdoor deck activities. meals and some beverages also included. The rates are per person based on double occupancy and are very reasonable. Once you have your cruise booked you will be able to decide on which shore excursions you would like to do at each destination.
Have a great time on your cruise & relax with a different sight each day.
